I LOVE how often God uses something easily visualized to get His point across. When someone is drunk, it shows in their speech, their gestures and actions, and in their choices. It is obvious to everyone that they are “under the influence.”
Here God uses this same imagery to invite us to be drunk with the Holy Spirit. How might that look? To begin with, it should show! Even the casual observer should be able to see we are under the influence of something supernatural. It should show in our words, our gestures and our actions. Our choices should be clearly marked by our being overcome by the Spirit’s persuasion.
This directive makes me chuckle. It’s graphic enough to remind us that the supernatural work of God in our life should be easy to see when others examine us.
Help me Lord, to be so full of your Spirit through the surrender of my will to Yours, that I might be obviously under the influence of You throughout this day.
Can I get an Amen?
Here’s how its described in its entirety in the ESV:
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:18-21
Just my thought for today.
